Several steps taken to crackdown on people indulging in fake GST invoices to take benefit of ITC

The Government on February 23, 2022 said it has taken several steps to crack down on people indulging in generating fake GST invoices to take benefit of input tax credit.

Replying to a question of AIR, Revenue Secretary Tarun Bajaj said, that linking Aadhaar card details have been made mandatory for the GST registration. He said, if an individual has not filed GSTR-1 then eventually he cannot file GSTR-3. He said there has been a consistent rise in GST returns in the past three years which has been one lakh 30 thousand crore, one lakh 40 thousand crore, and one lakh 41 thousand crore.

He said, the steps taken by the government is yielding fruit and hoped that fake GST invoices issue will be controlled.

Mr. Bajaj said there are more than 1.38 crore assesses are under GST. He said, some states have been doing good work in nabbing the people who are indulging in generating fake bills. He said because of the swift crackdown; gradually the cases of fake billing are reducing. The finance secretary said, since the time GST was implemented, the government has been facing fake GST invoices issue.

The government has taken steps such as sequential filing of returns; pre-filling, mandating of Aadhaar, he added. If any truck passes a toll plaza, officials will be notified if it takes the wrong route, he said.
