12% GST on unbranded chips too: Kerala AAR
Do you love salted or masala potato or tapioca chips? Or feast on roasted & salted groundnuts or cashew nuts? Then get ready to pay more as the Kerala bench of the GST Authority for Advance Rulings (GST-AAR) has held that such products would attract tax at 12%, even if unbranded.
The applicant, K Swaminathan, was a Palakkad-based supplier of various kinds of chips, sold without a brand name. He also sold unbranded halwa and roasted & salted groundnuts and cashew nuts. He contended that these products are classified as ‘Namkeen’ and would attract GST at 5% only. The GST-AAR agreed that halwa will be taxed at 5%. However, the other products would be taxed at 12%.
