New Delhi (10.08.2026): In an unprecedented administrative crackdown, the Ministry of Finance has abruptly removed the complete top management of the Chennai GST Zone and attached them to the Central Board of Indirect Taxes & Customs (CBIC) headquarters in New Delhi as Officers on Special Duty (OSD).
The sweeping move, which has sent shockwaves across the indirect tax administration, targets key top-level and field officials from the zone:

A section of senior IRS (C&IT) officials says that an administrative action of this scale—removing an entire tier of senior management from a major zone simultaneously—is virtually without precedent in recent decades. It may be underlined that Principal CC M M Singh is retiring next month.
Furthermore, departmental insiders highlighted that standard CBIC cadre rules generally lack explicit provisions for placing senior officers as OSDs at the Board "awaiting posting orders." This unusual arrangement has fuelled widespread anticipation within bureaucratic corridors of further regulatory or disciplinary steps in the coming days.
