Tax officer arrested for taking bribe
Bhubaneswar: Vigilance officials on Thursday arrested the commercial tax & goods and services tax (CT&GST) officer of Puri, Manas Ranjan Behera (33), on charges of taking Rs 30,000 as bribe from a man to release his seized vehicle.
Recently, the enforcement wing of the Puri commercial tax wing seized a goods-laden truck for not possessing the requisite bills.
As per government norms, the vehicle owner paid a GST penalty of Rs 79,200 on March 19. But Behera allegedly demanded Rs 30,000 to release the vehicle.
We received the complaint and made a proper verification and then laid a trap for Behera, who was nabbed while accepting the bribe. Simultaneous searches were being carried out at three locations to find out whether Behera possessed disproportionate assets, a vigilance officer said..
