A special Central Bureau of Investigation court in Ahmedabad on Tuesday sentenced a service tax officer to five years’ rigorous imprisonment in connection with a corruption case.

The special judge for CBI cases also slapped a fine of Rs 30,000 on Hashmukh Chhaganbhai Rathod, the then superintendent in service tax, Nadiad range.

The sleuths from CBI and Gandhinagar Anti-Corruption Bureau had on April 24, 2014, registered a case against Rathod based on the allegations that he had demanded Rs 2,500 to grant a registration certificate to the complainant’s partnership firm. After negotiation, the accused agreed to accept Rs 2,000 from the complainant.

On April 25, 2014, the officials laid a trap and “caught the accused red-handed while demanding and accepting the bribe of Rs 2,000 from the complainant and was subsequently arrested”.
