New Delhi: India is considering tax cuts on induction cooktops to boost domestic manufacturing and make electric cooking more affordable amid disruptions in the energy market.

The government is evaluating a reduction in customs duties on key components used in induction cooktops to lower input costs for manufacturers and support local production.

The commerce and industry ministry has also proposed reducing GST on induction cooktops from 18% to 5% to improve affordability and increase adoption.

The move comes as disruptions in global energy supplies, particularly due to the West Asia crisis, have raised concerns over cooking gas availability, leading to increased demand for electric cooking alternatives.

Stakeholder consultations have been held by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) along with other departments to address supply-demand challenges and stabilize prices in the sector.

The government has also taken steps such as extending timelines for quality control orders and energy efficiency norms to support the industry.

Overall, the proposed measures aim to encourage manufacturing, ensure supply stability, and promote the shift towards electric cooking solutions.
