India’s GST collections rise 6.2% to Rs.1.93 lakh crore in January

India’s goods and services tax (GST) collections reached Rs.1,93,384 crore in January, up 6.2% from the same month last year, the government said on Sunday, supported by strong domestic activity and healthy growth in import revenues.

Gross GST collections were Rs.1,82,094 crore in January 2025.

On a year-to-date basis (April–January 2025–26), gross collections rose to Rs.18,43,423 crore, marking a robust 8.3% annual growth.

The net GST revenue for January stood at Rs.1,70,719 crore, up 7.6% from the same month last year. Year-to-date net revenue reached Rs.15,95,752 crore, an annual growth of 6.8%.

Refunds saw mixed trends, with total refunds recorded at Rs.22,665 crore for January, a slight decline of 3.1% year-on-year. Domestic refunds fell 7.1% to Rs.13,119 crore, while export refunds grew 2.9% to Rs.9,546 crore.

Domestic GST collections showed steady growth, rising 4.8% year-on-year to Rs.1,41,132 crore. Import GST collections remained strong, with gross import revenue at Rs.52,253 crore, up 10.1% from January 2025.
The compensation cess, continuing as a transitional measure, dropped sharply to Rs.5,768 crore, down from Rs.13,009 crore last year, a decline of 55.6%.

State-wise post-settlement GST revenues showed a mixed picture. Industrialised states posted solid gains, while smaller regions experienced contractions:

Positive growth: Haryana (27%), Maharashtra (15%), Gujarat (13%), Himachal Pradesh (18%), Punjab (12%)

Moderate growth: Tamil Nadu (5%), Karnataka (7%), Uttar Pradesh (2%), Delhi (3%), West Bengal (1%)

Declines: Madhya Pradesh (-15%), Jharkhand (-6%), Odisha (-10%), Chhattisgarh (-23%), Ladakh (-30%), Lakshadweep (-30%)

Union Territories displayed varied performance, with Chandigarh up 15%, Puducherry up 11%, while Lakshadweep saw a sharp 30% decline.
