IMA natl prez flays GST on healthcare
Nagpur: Dr RV Asokan, the firebrand national president of the Indian Medical Association (IMA), was in Nagpur on Sunday to install IMA Nagpur chapter’s new team led by Dr Manjusha Giri.
Dr Asokan spoke candidly with TOI about the pressing issues plaguing India’s medical sector, urging immediate action from the government.
“Imagine taxing people for falling sick! It’s exploitation at its worst. This misery tax on patient beds must be withdrawn immediately,” he said.
Dr Asokan elaborated on the current GST structure, highlighting the exorbitant rates levied on life-saving equipment, basic medical supplies, and even health insurance. “This burden falls squarely on the shoulders of the patients,” he lamented, demanding a significant reduction in the GST burden on healthcare, emphasizing that it’s the sick who suffer the most.
