GST@8 : Why India needs a bold reset, not just tweaks
As India approaches the eighth anniversary of the Goods and Services Tax (GST), a powerful reform that subsumed a complex web of indirect taxes into a unified system, there’s an unmistakable air of achievement and unfinished business. The reform touted as a game-changer, has indeed brought uniformity, digitisation, and transparency at scale. Yet, structural rigidities and unresolved systemic issues continue to cap its full potential.
With April 2025 witnessing record GST collections at Rs.2.37 lakh crore, one might assume the system is in robust health. However, the numbers mask deeper structural challenges—complex rate structures, blocked input tax credits (ITC), unresolved disputes, and a legal vacuum around appellate mechanisms, claim experts. These experts and industry voices now agree that the GST regime needs a course correction, not in form, but in function and spirit.
