GST officer caught taking Rs.50,000 bribe in vigilance trap

Lucknow: The UP vigilance establishment on Wednesday arrested a deputy commissioner of the state goods and services tax (GST) department after allegedly catching her red-handed while accepting a Rs.50,000 bribe from a businessman for disposing of a pending tax assessment matter.

The accused has been identified as Ambika, deputy commissioner, GST (state), sector-6, Varanasi.

According to the vigilance establishment, the action was taken following a written complaint lodged by Ajay Kumar Maurya, son of Pannalal Maurya, director of Black Smith Industries Pvt Ltd, Varanasi. Maurya alleged that the GST officer had demanded a bribe of Rs.50,000 in connection with clarification and disposal of his company’s GST assessment file relating to the Feb 2023 return.

Officials said the complainant alleged that the deputy commissioner had sought illegal gratification to process and settle issues related to the company’s pending GST assessment.

On Jul 15, 2026, the vigilance team allegedly caught deputy commissioner Ambika red-handed while accepting Rs.50,000 in cash from the complainant near a restaurant in Chetganj, Varanasi.

Officials said a criminal case has been registered against the accused under the relevant provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act at the vigilance establishment police station, Varanasi sector.
