Even as the tax department is taking steps to stop tax evasion, the government is upset with huge losses due to compromised investigations in GST cases and is aware of the cases where investigations have been compromised in lieu of money, according to government sources.

The sources said the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) may probe the officials who were involved in the compromises.

According to the sources, traders and businessmen trying to save taxes have registered a number of shell companies and these companies have dummy directors who are paid on a commission basis or are on salary.

They said cases where GST investigation has been compromised and the cases were shut after taking bribes have come to light.

“The government is planning big action on the officials who were involved in these probes,” according to sources.

According to the latest data available, gross GST collection in December 2023 stood at Rs 1,64,882 crore. With this, the average monthly gross GST collection stood at Rs 1.66 lakh crore in the first nine-month period this year, which represents a 12 per cent increase compared to the Rs 1.49 lakh crore average recorded in the corresponding period of FY23.
