GST Council Meeting LIVE: Status quo on online gaming, casinos and race courses
The 54th GST Council meeting, chaired by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, has started on Monday (September 9).
The meeting, which includes participation from state finance ministers and tax officials, is expected to address several pressing issues, including the taxation of insurance premiums, rate rationalisations, and an analysis of revenues from online gaming.
One of the primary agenda items is the potential reduction of GST rates on health and life insurance premiums. Currently taxed at 18%, the Council will explore options to lower these rates or exempt specific groups, such as senior citizens.
This discussion follows calls from both opposition leaders and BJP members, including Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, advocating for exemptions on these premiums.
