In a reply to a query posed in the state assembly, finance minister Kanu Desai notified that Gujarat asks for more than Rs.1,500 cr in Goods and Services Tax (GST) returns from the central government. The finance department has contacted the union finance ministry for the same.

Desai notified the assembly that as of Dec 31, 2022, the state’s GST return dues stood at Rs.9,136.26 cr.

After which, the accountant general revised the figures as per the state’s verified income, and the number was decided to be Rs.11,557.94 cr.

The Centre, however, had given Rs. 864.62 cr in February 2023 and Rs. 9,020.97 cr in July 2023 as GST returns to Gujarat.

From this, the due amount currently stands at Rs.1,672.35 cr.

Desai also stated that the ministry has been notified of the timely audit certificate of income by the accountant general as per the provisions of Section 7 of the Goods and Services Tax (Compensation to States) Act 2015.
