In a major step toward operationalising the long-awaited Goods and Services Tax Appellate Tribunal (GSTAT), the Central government has notified the appointment of judicial and technical members to the Tribunal’s Principal Bench and State Benches across India.

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), acting on the Department of Revenue’s recommendations, approved multiple key appointments under the GSTAT framework. These include members to the Principal Bench in New Delhi and 31 State Benches, bringing the appellate body one step closer to hearing its first cases.

Among the top appointments notified:

  • A. Venu Prasad, retired IAS officer, has been appointed as Technical Member (State), Principal Bench, New Delhi, for a term of four years or until he attains the age of 67, whichever is earlier.
  • Anil Kumar Gupta, retired IRS (C&IT) officer, will serve as Technical Member (Centre) at the Principal Bench on the same terms.
  • Justice (Retd.) Mayank Kumar Jain, formerly a Judge of the Allahabad High Court, has been appointed Judicial Member, Principal Bench, New Delhi.

Each will draw a monthly salary of Rs.2,25,000 and assume charge following formal notification.
