The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) has ensured the footwear sector that it will reach out to the government to discuss on rationalisation of BIS standards & GST tax slab rationalisation.

Praveen Khandelwal, National Secretary General, CAIT said that the concerns raised by the footwear industry are genuine and CAIT will take up the matter with Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

He said this while addressing more than 200 trade leaders of footwear sector from all over the country who gathered in New Delhi to discuss two of their core issues namely imposition of mandatory BIS standards on all types of footwear manufactured in India and levy of 12 per cent GST on footwear raising from earlier 5 per cent.

The trade body pressed on the imposition of BIS standards on country made items and how essential it is for gabbing more and substantial share in global market for Indian products.

However, since India has a large population and diversity, it is more important to consider which variety of the products can confirm to BIS standards and placement of products in right category of GST tax slab, said CAIT.

Such defined parameters will ensure robust growth in domestic trade and will help considerably in meeting the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat.

There are more than 1800 types of footwear manufactured in India ranging from an ordinary sleeper to high class footwear for ladies, gents, kids, sportsmen and various other sectors of consumers.
