Bogus billing scam unearthed in Morbi, 5.19cr GST evaded
Ahmedabad: The Ahmedabad and Rajkot zonal units of the directorate general of GST intelligence (DGGI) have unearthed a bogus billing scam in Morbi. According to GST officials, the racket involved the clandestine supply of ceramic tiles under the cover of e-way bills and invoices of dummy firms, without payment of GST. Thus far, DGGI officials have detected GST evasion of Rs 5.19 crore.
This figure may rise as the investigation progresses. DGGI has arrested one person in connection with the case.
“Based on a complaint from an association of ceramics manufacturers, Ahmedabad and Rajkot zonal units learnt that e-way bills were exploited using a loophole on the portal. E-way bills could be generated by a transporter even for a consignor/consignee not party to the transaction. On further investigation, officials unearthed the unlawful supply of ceramic tiles using this method,” a statement issued by the Ahmedabad unit of the DGGI said. Some 993 e-way bills were generated using this method. After searches at various locations and based on local intelligence and truck movements, DGGI officials identified transporters and others involved in places such as Morbi, Jamnagar and Dhrangadhra in Gujarat and Sanchore and Ajmer in Rajasthan.
