Bengal beats nat’l avg in GST collection in 2024-25, CM stresses state’s fiscal discipline
Kolkata: Bengal registered 2% higher growth than national average in GST collection for financial year 2024-25, CM Mamata Banerjee posted on X on Sunday. "Glad to share that West Bengal is steadily progressing in its own resource mobilization efforts, which is evident from the fiscal results compiled at the end of the FY 2024-25.
In GST in '24-'25, we have collected Rs 4,808 crore more than the preceding year, which shows 11.4% growth. This is 2% more th-an the national level (9.44%), and is demonstrative of our increasing internal financial strength," she wrote.
Banerjee also mentioned that in registration and stamp duty, the number of deeds registered had increased by 60,000, which showed dynamism of the market in Bengal. According to the CM, the collection from stamp duty and registration in 2024-25 had been Rs 1,908 crore more than the previous year, registering a growth of 31%. "All this shows that we believe in self-reliance and fiscal discipline, and our administration is serious in streamlining the state's finances for the welfare of the people of Bengal," she posted.
Banerjee also congratulated the finance department for this achievement. "Congratulations to our finance department, and everybody indeed for cooperating with us. Let us move from strength to strength!" she added. Per the economic review for 2023-24, Bengal witnessed increase in GSDP and reduction in debt and deficit indicators such as revenue deficit, fiscal deficit and debt-to-GSDP ratios.
While Gujarat, Odisha, Bengal and Maharashtra reduced their debt-to-GSDP ratio, Punjab and Tamil Nadu saw the sharpest increases, the review added. Bengal's GSDP now stands at Rs 18 lakh crore.
The last full budget of the Banerjee govt before the 2026 assembly election was majorly focused on women and rural infrastructure, with an olive branch to state employees. The CM said after the budget that almost 50% of the allocation was directed towards women. It was a Rs 3.8 lakh crore budget with a marginal deficit of Rs 0.1 crore. The budget had set a target of own tax revenue of Rs 1,12,543 crore for 2025-26, a little over 12% jump over 2024-25 (revised) figure of Rs 99,863 crore.
