7 years on, GST tribunal bench still not established in U’khand
Nainital: Seven years after the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST), Uttarakhand is yet to have a GST tribunal bench. The central govt had announced its formation in Sep 2023 but delays in setting up an office and appointing technical members have stalled its launch.
This was disclosed by Advocate Nadeem Uddin, an information rights activist, who got the information from the state tax commissioner's office after seeking details about the establishment of the tribunal under the GST Act.
The Union finance ministry had issued an official notification on Sep 14, 2023, confirming the formation of the GST appellate tribunal's state bench in Dehradun. However, the process of identifying an office and appointing technical members is still ongoing.
A committee, chaired by Rajeev Jain, chief commissioner of central GST, was formed on April 8 to find possible office sites for the bench. Its members include Dehradun commissioner Neelesh Kumar Gupta, state tax commissioner Ahmed Iqbal, and former Dehradun district magistrate Sonika.
