1 lakh notices sent for not filing income tax returns: Nirmala Sitharaman

Nirmala Sitharaman, the Union Finance Minister, reported that the 1 lakh notices were sent for not filing income tax returns and misrepresentation of income by the government. The minister said, “The notices were sent where the income was found to be close to Rs 50 lakh and they are expected to be cleared by the end of this fiscal.”

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) chairperson, Nitin Gupta, reported that over 4 crore income tax returns (ITR) have been filed for the fiscal year 2022-23, with over half processed, resulting in INR 80 lakh refunds.

However, a shortage of manpower in the income tax department is impeding efforts to achieve better results. Gupta urged Sitharaman to approve the cadre restructuring proposal as soon as possible.
